Programming is the activity around which all of my work centers. I enjoy writing computer programs. Finding elegant solutions to difficult problems. Building large systems that are maintainable and robust. Using computer languages from different backgrounds and traditions. Finding the right tool for the job, and using it to its full potential.

I prefer to work in free software projects, because the tight cooperation with users and co-developers from around the world produces the best results in terms of code quality. It is also a very rewarding way of using one's skills — see my free software page for more background on this.

Nowadays I'm mostly a Java/J2EE programmer, with a background in many other languages and environments (see the list of my projects for details). Programming languages I am fluent in include: Java, Javascript, C, C++, Perl, Ada 95, Modula-2, Lisp, Smalltalk, and Prolog. I am familiar with application servers, relational databases, messaging systems, and internet technology in general.
